The origin of Solitall game is shrouded in mystery. Ovide wrote about the game and described it in his book "Ars Amatoria" , people in Europe rediscovered Solitall around the XIIth century with a game called "Al-qirq" (the mill, in Arabic) and it excited the mathematicans like Leibniz and Édouard Lucas, who have written interesting essays about this game and have invented immense number of its variations.
Legend says that Solitall was invented by Pelisson, a French mathematician, to entertain Louis XIV - known as "Roi Soleil" (Sun King). Maybe the truth is in another legend, which says that it was a French nobleman who invented the game while imprisoned in the Bastille.
Whatever the truth is, the oldest picture of the Solitall palyer is an engraving made that year by Claude Auguste Berey of Anne de Rohan-Chabot, Princess of Soubise, with the puzzle by her side.
